Over the weekend, dog lovers near and far went to Dominion Riverrock with their furbabies to join the Ultimate Air Dogs competition. Everyone had a blast and it was an awesome day for the dogs to show off their natural skills and talents.
Among the dogs who joined the competition is Jake, a 10 year old Belgian Malinois. Jake already joined the competitions in the past 2 years. In fact, he was the Iron Dog Champion for two consecutive weeks. It was his first time this year to join the dock diving competition, though. Doran Dupont thought it would be amazing to let Jake join the dock diving since he loves to swim.
Not all dogs come to Riverrock to compete of course. Bryan and Camille Smith and Maria Schultz of Black Dog Paddle offer opportunities for stand-up paddling with your pup throughout the weekend.
Schultz wrote the book on paddle-boarding with a dog, “How to SUP With Your Pup,” after getting into the activity and paddling with her two Australian shepherds, Kona and Riley.
Paddle-boarding with dogs gets more and more popular each year, according to the Smiths, who teach several two-day classes during the summer with Schultz.
“There is so much that goes into it to make sure you and your dog are safe,” said Camille Smith.
Blackdog Paddle sees students coming from as far away as Ohio and South Carolina to attend classes.
“We have really built a tribe. It’s been a lot of fun,” said Smith.
Aside from Jake, there were also a lot of dogs and dog owners hoping for the win! At the end of the day, it was a great event for all the dogs and dog owners. They all had a blast!
